We said “Happy Birthday, America,” ate our apple pies and watched fireworks bursting in the night air. So now what, New Yorkers? It’s July, and the summer party season’s just heating up.

Restaurant Week

Even if you’re not a foodie, you’ll love restaurant week. How can you not? It’s got first class food for a steal. So, that fancy lunch at A Voce that you’ve always wanted to try...now you can because it won’t break the bank.  Double dip recession?  We don’t think so. Plus, it’s a great birthday surprise.

An Adventure in food. Here’s how it works: 275+ Restaurants. Two Weeks. You’ve got a couple of options:  A three-course lunch with a prix fix of $24.07 or the same for dinner at a slightly higher cost - $35. Beverages, tax, and gratuity, alas aren’t included (this is New York, afterall). Restaurant week is the perfect chance to take a birthday guy or gal out for some fine dining.

Some of the participating Gastrohubs:

·      Craftbar: Two words – Small Plates. A critic’s fave, Craftbar, has a seasonal menu with simple, yet quality ingredients and family-style dining.

·      Nobu: Sushi king.

·      Dos Caminos: Very popular Mexican restaurant with guacamole made tableside.

·      Blue Water Grill: Grab some topnotch seafood before the tarballs invade. Blue Water Grill is constantly packed and has  some tasty oyster treats.

Head to the Roof

Ready to party? For the New York party crowd, summer is all about showing some skin at the hottest hangouts. One thing Manhattan is great at is building lavish rooftop bars.

Here are some of New York’s latest rooftop offerings:

Up:  A chic upscale flourish with incredible, clear as day, views of the Chrysler building, a retractable glass ceiling,  a fire place, a patio with living green walls, an indoor game room, another bar backlit by LED lights and a great selection of scotches.

Mercat Negre Rooftop
: Yes, even Williamsburg has its own rooftop bar.  The Mercat, known for its innovative selection of Barcelona-inspired dishes (the chef is a recent NYC transplant) features a full food and drink menu with specialties like Squid ink pasta and paella at its downstairs venue. Up top, there ample deck room with wooden benches and picnic tables.

230 Fifth: Open 365 days a year from 4 in the afternoon to 4 in the morning, 230 Fifth is a New York party palace created by the former owner of Roxy and Palladium. It’s got a sexy Penthouse Lounge/Bar, a heated rooftop garden and a whole lot more.  230 Fifth is great for throwing birthday parties or just a night on the town.

Press: Located on the 16th floor, Press Lounge has a sophisticated, sexy, chic uptown girl in the city kind of vibe complete with a 20-foot reflecting pool and super-comfy leather couches inside. Press is also open all four seasons. The menu is an eclectic mix of America/ Italian cuisine.

So, if you’re aching for a change in the club scene, or want to take your special birthday someone out for a fun party, New York’s rooftop scene doesn’t disappoint. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the City from above.
